I used to knit (badly); so I appreciate a good hand knit - especially when its designed to order and knit with love.
6 months ago, Kitty Choy proprietor of the Marikit by Kitty Choy knitwear brand commissioned me to photograph her 2014 Look Book.
Kitty designs and knits Bohemium Chic (she makes-to-order pants too!) and is known for her colourful designs. Kitty wanted professional images of her pieces - she told me in her own words:
“Pictures can actually tell a story and every piece of Marikit has a story to tell - all my pieces are quite colourful and a headturner for every person that wears it. And I need good photos to tell that story”
Only too happy to help!
There was one condition, however - her pooch Hugo, a Maltese x Terrier (a rescued, whose ears can speak on their own) had to be cast alongside most of her pieces.
Hugo is Kitty’s ‘sidekick’ - he’s there when she designs and knits and he loves Marikit knits enough to lie amongst them.
Marikit’s first look book aims to give Kitty’s fans an insight into her life, her inspirations and some places she loves.
With this project there was concept building, test shoots for styling, location scouting and art direction. Shooting in Autumn can be tricky - those wet days - but the weather held up nicely for us - a bit windy but we took advantage of the beautiful Autumn light.
The shot of Kitty next to Louis Vuitton has to be my favourite (I’m a city girl, now I said it).
Have to say it again, I love working with creatives! Kitty was awesome to work with - so much passion and creativity. And she understands how creativity works.
Kitty will be at Finders Keepers Markets, Sydney 6 & 7 June if you want to grab some of these awesome knits - tell her I said hello!
Kitty draws her inspitation from designer Isabel Marant as well as anything Bohemium/Gypsy. She doesn’t follow trends or fashion but insists on creating timeless pieces. Marikit by the way, stands for “Pretty” in Tagalog (Filipino) - in celebration of her husband’s heritage - when you meet Kitty, you soon realise her brand is about her and her family, Hugo the Maltese x Terrier and her husband.
Garment styling by Tiffany from All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go - who by the way would like to add that she's just a fashion obsessed mama with a penchant for expensive shoes! She hopes to encourage other mums to continue to be stylish even after they have kids!
